MONTEGO BAY, St James — A 48-year-old American firefighter is in police custody after airport safety allegedly discovered a disassembled pistol and ammunition hidden in his checked baggage at Sangster Worldwide Airport on Sunday afternoon.
Police have recognized the accused as Roland Douglas II, of Guntersville, Alabama. Stories are that about 12:45 p.m., Douglas was making ready to depart the island when safety personnel noticed an anomaly throughout routine screening.
A search of his bag, performed in his presence, reportedly revealed a silver-and-black Sig Sauer .380 pistol, two magazines, and 13 rounds of ammunition.
Douglas was instantly arrested and later charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of ammunition. Investigators say preparations are being made for him to look in courtroom.
The police are reminding guests that Jamaica has strict firearms legal guidelines, and anybody discovered with unlicensed weapons or ammunition faces heavy fines and doable imprisonment.
