Minister of Training, Expertise, Youth and Data, Dr Dana Morris Dixon, made the disclosure throughout Friday’s PEP press convention on the ministry’s Heroes Circle workplaces in Kingston.

Within the 2025 sitting of PEP, 63 and 69 per cent of scholars had been deemed proficient or extremely proficient in arithmetic and language arts, respectively.

Among the many 4 topics, arithmetic had the very best proportion of scholars on the growing stage at 34 per cent, adopted by science at 28 per cent.

Nonetheless, Morris Dixon reasoned that the ministry’s arithmetic interventions are paying off.

“In grade 4, 25.5 per cent of them had been at the start stage, which means they had been very primary in maths. But when we glance by grade six this yr, solely three per cent of them had been seen to be at the start stage. That’s a giant, large deal,” she stated.

Moreover, in grade 4, solely 27 per cent of scholars had been labeled as proficient, and by grade six, that quantity greater than doubled to 56 per cent.

“These are some encouraging numbers. Are they the place we wish to be? No. We’ve got extra work to do…. We’re seeing progress being made, which signifies that what we’re doing is correct. We simply want to accentuate it,” Morris Dixon stated.

Turning to language arts, she shared that just about 34 per cent of scholars in grade 4 had been deemed to be at the start stage, and 27.4 per cent had been on the growing stage.

“Solely 34 per cent had been proficient in grade 4. However by grade 5, 56.6 per cent of our college students had been now proficient, and it didn’t cease. Our academics didn’t cease. They continued working with the scholars, and by grade six, 67 per cent of our college students had been on the proficient stage,” the minister stated.

PEP includes a number of assessments derived from grades 4, 5 and 6. The Grade 4 Efficiency Duties had been administered in June 2023, whereas college students sat the Grade 5 Efficiency Duties in June 2024.

Grade 6 has three parts – Potential Take a look at, Efficiency Duties and Curriculum-based Assessments – which had been administered in February, March and April 2025, respectively.
