The federal government says it’s positioning itself to take full benefit of the United Nations (UN) Excessive Seas Treaty, which entered into pressure, on Saturday January 17.

The treaty formally known as, “The Settlement Below the United Nations Conference on the Regulation of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Organic Variety of Areas Past Nationwide Jurisdiction”, is extensively known as the ‘BBNJ Settlement’.

It marks a brand new section of worldwide cooperation in ocean governance.

Minister of Overseas Affairs, Kamina Johnson Smith, has welcomed the event.

She famous that Jamaica ratified the treaty in June 2025 on the third UN Oceans Convention held in Europe, after actively taking part within the negotiations of the BBNJ Settlement.

Mrs. Johnson Smith stated Jamaica continues to play an energetic position in multilateral ocean governance.
