LONDON — Ethel Caterham, a 115-year-old resident of Surrey, England, has been named the world’s oldest dwelling individual following the demise of Brazilian nun Sister Inah Canabarro, who handed away at 116.

Caterham, born on August 21, 1909, within the village of Shipton Bellinger, credit her longevity to a easy philosophy: “By no means arguing with anybody, I pay attention and I do what I like,” she mentioned from her nursing dwelling in Camberley.

A life filled with journey has marked her years. At 18, she traveled to India as a nanny and later lived in Hong Kong and Gibraltar along with her husband Norman, a British military main. The couple had two daughters earlier than Norman’s demise in 1976.

Her care dwelling, Hallmark Lakeview Luxurious Care, celebrated her milestone with cake and a “115” tiara. “Your energy, spirit, and knowledge are an inspiration to us all,” the power mentioned in a press release.

The document for the oldest individual ever stays with Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122.
