    San Diego police announce plans for DUI checkpoint on Thursday night

    The San Diego Police Department introduced plans for a DUI checkpoint someplace within the metropolis limits on Thursday evening.

    Officers will likely be stopping drivers from 10 p.m. Thursday to three a.m. Friday to examine for alcohol or marijuana impairment in addition to correct licensing.

    Police mentioned the checkpoint location will likely be chosen based mostly on a historical past of previous DUI crashes and arrests.

    Checkpoints like this are sometimes introduced prematurely, with the division noting, “The first goal of checkpoints is to not make arrests, however to advertise public security by deterring drivers from driving impaired.”

    Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face a median of $13,500 in fines and penalties, in addition to a suspended license.

    Funding for Thursday’s checkpoint was supplied by a grant from the California Workplace of Visitors Security.
