    Irish Aid Worker Gena Heraty Freed After Weeks in Haitian Captivity

    Irish humanitarian employee Gena Heraty has been safely launched after practically a month in captivity in Haiti, her household confirmed Friday.

    Heraty, from Westport, County Mayo, was kidnapped on August 3, 2025, together with seven others—together with a three-year-old youngster—from the Sainte-Hélène orphanage in Kenscoff, the place she has labored for over 30 years. The orphanage, operated by the charity Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs, cares for kids with disabilities.

    The kidnapping has been linked to the gang coalition Viv Ansanm, led by former police officer Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier. Sources say the gang demanded a ransom past the charity’s capability, forcing the short-term closure of two hospitals related to the group.

    Heraty’s household expressed profound reduction, thanking Irish and Haitian authorities for his or her efforts in securing her launch. Eire’s Tánaiste Simon Harris additionally praised her braveness and lifelong dedication to humanitarian work.

    Heraty holds a Bachelor of Enterprise Research from the College of Limerick and has spent many years supporting susceptible youngsters in Haiti, particularly these with bodily and mental disabilities.

    The rescue of Heraty and her fellow captives marks a significant reduction for each the Irish group and the orphanage, which had been left reeling from the traumatic incident.
