    CARPHA calls for action to eliminate plastic pollution – Jamaica Inquirer

    CARPHA identified that the biggest generator of single use plastic waste on the earth is the packaging sector, which accounts for 36 per cent  of all plastics produced, with 85 per cent of single-use meals and beverage containers ending up in landfills, or polluting the oceans, soils and delicate ecosystems .  

    Dr Lisa Indar, Government Director of CARPHA said that whereas plastics are helpful and important for some sectors, their mismanagement has develop into a public well being and surroundings subject. 

    “Pathways permit microplastics and poisonous chemical substances from plastics to crossover into our meals chain, affecting seafood with penalties to our well being. CARPHA recommends multisector motion as plastic air pollution crosscuts many sectors – collectively, we are able to defend our well being, our surroundings and our future,” she mentioned.

    CARPHA mentioned whereas progress is encouraging, accelerating motion by means of stronger insurance policies, finance and funding in inexperienced applied sciences and public engagement will probably be essential to attaining a future the place plastic manufacturing, consumption and waste are sustainably managed.  

    In recognition of World Setting Day, CARPHA encourages the Caribbean neighborhood to hitch the struggle to cut back single-use plastics, assist sustainable insurance policies akin to recycling, upcycling and waste-to-value initiatives and advocate for world collaboration.
