    Ashoka Road Renamed Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive – Jamaica Information Service

    Ashoka Street in Waterhouse, Kingston, the place Olympian Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was born and raised, has been formally renamed in her honour.

    Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive was unveiled throughout a ceremony organised by the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Company (KSAMC) on Sunday (Could 25).

    The official renaming of Ashoka Street follows the KSAMC’s approval of a decision introduced by Councillor for the Waterhouse Division, Byron Clarke, final October.

    The honour is in recognition of Mrs. Fraser-Pryce’s achievements in monitor and subject and her unwavering dedication and contribution to Waterhouse and the broader Jamaica.

    One of many biggest sprinters of all time, Mrs. Fraser-Pryce is a 10-time World Champion and has secured eight Olympic medals.

    She can also be the one sprinter, male or feminine, to win 5 world titles (2009, 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2022) within the 100-metre occasion.

    Throughout Sunday’s ceremony, Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, famous that the renaming of the street will function an inspiration for kids.

    “This street, this Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive, is not only for her. It’s for each little one on this neighborhood who walks to high school with an enormous dream. It’s for each teenager who wonders if anybody will ever name their title with respect. It’s for each younger man and each younger lady who must know that the place they’re from doesn’t place limits on the place they’ll go,” he mentioned.

    “Each time a toddler sees this signal, each time somebody passes by it ought to spark one thing inside them. It ought to remind them that their circumstance doesn’t outline them. Their mindset, their work ethic [and] their ardour…, that’s what issues most,” he added.

    Mayor Swaby’s remarks have been echoed by Member of Parliament for St. Andrew Western, Anthony Hylton, who famous that the honour bestowed on Mrs. Fraser-Pryce is genuinely-earned.

    “When one amongst us has completed what Shelly-Ann has completed, it is just becoming that we recognise it,” he mentioned.

    He famous that the folks of Waterhouse and Jamaica are pleased with her accomplishments.

    “You’ve gotten lifted up Waterhouse and the folks of Jamaica and, certainly, the complete Caribbean and in so doing the least we will do is to honour you within the ways in which we’re at this time,” Mr. Hylton mentioned.

    In the meantime, the 10-time World Champion expressed gratitude for the honour, whereas noting that the second was not only for her but additionally the neighborhood.

    “Standing on this street is such a testomony to exhausting work, to neighborhood, to household, and simply empowerment. That is the trail that I took day by day, 12 months after 12 months, and it’s a journey and a path that the youngsters on this road will take as properly. And they’re going to know that also they are destined for greatness, and greatness can come from Ashoka Street,” Mrs. Fraser-Pryce mentioned.

    Reflecting on her journey, the athlete highlighted that the residents of Ashoka Street performed a key function in her success.

    “That is the place I used to be well-known first. This [community] nurtured me. That is the place I acquired encouragement. It didn’t matter what occurred at Champs. After I went to Champs, once I got here house, they have been celebrating me,” she shared, whereas encouraging them to point out that very same help to different kids.
