PORTLAND, Jamaica — Forty-two Haitian nationals who arrived in Jamaica illegally by boat on Sunday have all been accounted for, police have confirmed.

The group — made up of 29 males, seven ladies (together with one in superior being pregnant), 4 boys, and two women — arrived at Ross Craig in Lengthy Bay, Portland, aboard a 25-foot makeshift canoe with no engine. Upon arrival, they have been seen alongside the roadway and seaside within the space earlier than being detained by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Drive (JCF) and the Jamaica Defence Drive (JDF).

Authorities say the pregnant girl was taken to a maternity ward for medical consideration, whereas the remainder of the group was transported to the Port Antonio Hospital, the place they have been processed by immigration and well being officers.

In accordance with police sources, the vessel the migrants used was later set ablaze, a typical incidence meant to forestall re-use or salvage.

It’s suspected that the group might depart the island as early as Monday, although no official affirmation has been given concerning repatriation plans.

The arrival marks the newest in a rising variety of unlawful landings alongside Jamaica’s northeastern shoreline, notably in Portland, which has grow to be a hotspot for Haitian migration. The rise comes amid escalating political instability and gang violence in Haiti, driving many to flee the nation in quest of security and higher alternatives.

Jamaican authorities, together with worldwide companions, proceed to watch the scenario as regional governments grapple with the continuing humanitarian disaster in Haiti.
